NYC Winter Jazzfest 2014

We finally got around to post our videos from this year's Winter Jazzfest in NYC. As usual, it was a blast, actually bigger than ever this year with over 90 groups that played.

So it was clear that we had to make some decisions. On the first day, we went with someone we already knew: Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, whom we had seen before when he played with singer José James. Kuroda played songs from his debut album (highly recommended!) on Blue Note called Rising Son. On the video, they play a song called Mala. Check out Samora Pinderhughes' great keyboard solo starting at about 7:30!

Takuya Kuroda – trumpet
Corey King – trombone
Samora Pinderhughes – keys
Rashaan Carter – bass
Adam Jackson – drums

On the second day, we first went to see the amazing German sax player Angelika Niescier at The Bitter End. We were not at all disappointed!

Angelika Niescier – Sax
Chris Tordini – Bass
Tyshawn Sorey – Drums

Then we checked out singer Gretchen Parlato at (Le) Poisson Rouge, who was accompanied by the always amazing Mark Guiliana on drums.

Gretchen Parlato – Vocals
Taylor Eigsti – Piano and Keys
Alan Hampton – Bass and Guitar
Mark Guiliana – Drums

Next on our list was NEXT Collective at the Blue Note, featuring 3-time Grammy nominated pianist Gerald Clayton. Really liked Matthew Stevens on guitar (check out his solo, which starts at about 3:55).

Gerald Clayton – Piano
Logan Richardson – Sax
Jamire Williams – Drums
Matthew Stevens – Guitar
Burniss Earl Travis – Bass

We stayed at the Blue Note, because the next group to play was an old favorite: Jason Lindner's Now vs. Now, who played songs from their new album called Earth Analog. It's just hard to find a label for what they do, and that's a good thing: It's somewhere in between electronica, rock and jazz. But whatever it is, even people who aren't into Jazz will likely love their stuff!

Jason Lindner – keyboards, musical director
Panagiotis Andreou – bass, vocals
Justin Tyson – drums
