Taylor McFerrin's release party @ nublu, 02.18.11

After seeing McFerrin's yesterday tweet "tonight = @TaylorMcFerrin x @RYAT x @playerhadyn at nublu. 10pm. You may see me get smashed" we knew we had to be there.

Turned out to be an awesome performance, were he also played with José JamesJordana de Lovely and others.

Below, the song "Blackmagic" — performed in the dark!

Bossa Nova and the Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s

Last Christmas, one of us got this as a present! Edited by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker from Soul Jazz Records, it is a book that has the exact same size as the sleeve of a vinyl record. The reason: It's a collection of art work from record sleeves.

Here is some of what Soul Jazz Records has to say about their book:

"This is the first ever collection of bossa nova record cover artwork, featuring stunning modernist and revolutionary designs that reflect the radical and exciting idealism of Brazil at the start of the 1960s.

Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) bring you this amazing new deluxe hardback 12" x 12" book, 200 pages, 100s of stunning absolutely killer Bossa Nova sleeves from Brazil plus loads of historical, cultural and social text as well as biographies on loads of the artists!"

For more, check out a review in Eye Magazine, a picture gallery in the Guardian, and an interview about the book with Stuart Baker in Jungle Drums magazine.

Below are a some of out favorite images:

Clive Tanaka y su Orquesta.

Recently we came across these neat videos from the Japanese musician Clive Tanaka. The songs belong to his "Jet Set Siempre No. 1"  album which is now available in vinyl and digital format, but it used to be only available on cassette tape.

Both of the videos were directed by Brandon Domer. Nostalgia put to good use.

Thomas Herb (Compost) @ The Harry Klein Club, Munich, Germany 12.30.10

Thomas Herb was spinning at the Harry Klein on the 30th, at his regular gig there called Compost Black Label Sessions.
The Harry Klein is supposed to be the number one club for electronic music in Munich, we were told.
